Investigation found images of abuse

The website’s activities also spurred dual lawsuits from more than 100 women against the parent company for porn-streaming site PornHub for allegedly profiting off of GirlsDoPorn’s trafficking by hosting its videos. The company reached settlements with the women in both lawsuits and also agreed to pay over $1.8 million to resolve a probe by federal prosecutors who alleged the company knew or should have known it was accepting money that originated from sex-trafficking operations. This time, in the case of 22 women who were deceived and coerced by Michael Pratt, owner of GirlsDoPorn, into performing sex acts on film that were subsequently uploaded to Pornhub. These women sued GirlsDoPorn and won a $12.7 million lawsuit against the company.

The legal documents also lay out the historic claims of abuse against Girls Do Porn which were behind that company’s senior staff being arrested. Victims had repeatedly contacted the company to complain and tell them about the problems, it says. Details of the suit are contained in a legal filing first reported by Vice. In December, Pornhub radically changed its user guidelines to ban unverified uploads and downloads. Last week, the platform released its first-ever transparency report for 2020, as part of its updated trust and safety policies.

It means we are now aware that things aren’t always as they seem when it comes to online pornography. Michael Pratt, the main culprit of the trafficking scheme, fled the country and is a wanted fugitive. And Pornhub executives who are accused of distributing and profiting from the victims’ trauma have yet to face civil or criminal consequences. While the victims may never be fully free of the trauma they have suffered, one of the women, who months before had tried to take her life, told Holm after the sentencing that she has never felt better than knowing Garcia was finally held accountable. The women faced a dark reality – the knowledge that for the rest of their lives, people would use the crime scene footage of their abuse for both pleasure and profit.

The aftermath of the cruelty I survived on those porn shoots has been a fear of people that I am only now overcoming. For a long time just walking down the street was hard because I never knew who had seen them. I have learned to look people in the eye again, but it took years and distance from that time. I was filmed on a set full of cameras, crew, and “performers.” I call them performers so that you will understand who I mean, but you should know that all of it was real.
